The Films That Shaped It

Baisers volés

1968 · François Truffaut

Linklater has spoken about the influence of Truffaut’s Antoine Doinel films, which follow Jean-Pierre Léaud’s character from adolescence to middle age. Indeed, the first Before movie, set in Paris, features a French protagonist and an American protagonist wandering the streets, exchanging witty banter, and falling in love—much like Antoine Doinel’s encounter with an American tourist in Stolen Kisses.
