The Films That Shaped It

Roma

2018

I revisited a lot of Mexican films, particularly from the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, like Buñuel’s Los Olvidados to kind of remember the texture and the sounds of Mexico City.

I revisited films that portray human experiences, the passing of life. The Apu Trilogy, 'Pather Panchali' especially, for the way it portrays childhood and family. That was very important.

Amarcord was a very big influence because it's a memory film with an emotional arc, but it doesn't have a narrative arc.
