Tsui Hark stated that his 1994 film *The Lovers* was a direct engagement with Li Han-hsiang's definitive 1963 musical, *The Love Eterne*. He aimed to infuse the melodrama with his signature kinetic style, moving away from the more theatrical presentation of the original to create a more dynamic and action-oriented adaptation for contemporary audiences.

It showed me how a film could really touch people deeply, how powerful emotion could be conveyed through simple storytelling, and how important strong characters and a clear narrative were.
