El espiritu de la colmena
Synopsis
In 1940, in the immediate aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, a young girl living on the Castilian plain is haunted after attending a screening of James Whale's 1931 film Frankenstein and hearing from her sister that the monster is not dead, instead existing as a spirit inhabiting a nearby barn.

I often told people that Pan’s Labyrinth has three main influences: The Spirit of the Beehive... because The Spirit of the Beehive is about the interior life of a little girl, framed by a very adult world in Spain, and that’s what I tried to do with Ofelia in Pan’s Labyrinth.
