I also wanted to make a film that would embrace several generations and different ages, in the way of Edward Yang’s Yi Yi—the way it goes from one generation to another, from one point of view to another, and the way it embraces the whole family, and yet at the same time is extremely focused on one character.
I'm quite impressed by some of the great directors, like Bergman and Antonioni, and especially Mizoguchi. They don't follow any trends, they just keep exploring the issues that they're interested in.
